Visit to the London Zoo

On Friday there was a talk for all research students at UCL. At this talk I met up again with Kasia (Katarina from Poland) and she asked if I would be interested in going to the zoo with her and Christian and maybe some others…sure I said!

So yesterday morning found Ruth and I (yes, I added another Maltese to the group :P) getting the bus to Warren Station where we were to meet. After about 15minutes – no one was there…hmmm…try to call Kasia…no answer…5 minutes later…Christian arrives – woohoo! Some phone calls later we realised that it would be only us, and Kasia would meet us there…off we went…

London zoo was founded in 1826. During its time it has had a number of famous animals, including Winnie…Winnie is the star in a film called ‘A Bear named Winnie‘, a film which I had seen a few months ago, and which, surprisingly for me, I still remember its name and its story…so it must be good πŸ˜‰ . It is also the inspiration after the Winnie the Pooh stories!

Compared to the Prague zoo, the London zoo is much smaller. However, the same organisation has another zooΒ  in Bedforshire (Whipsnade zoo) which is much larger, and houses the larger animals. I think the most interesting for me where the butterfly house and the penguins. I always love penguinds – they are so cute and such a character, that you can watch them for ages! I had already been to a butterfly house when I was in Konstanz, Germany, on the nearby island of Mainau, but walking through a palce with butterflies flying around is nonetheless a great experience. We also saw a butterfly being born in the puparium! Something the worker there she had never seen before…so it was good πŸ™‚

After the zoo we then went on to have a picnic in Regent’s Park. But first we needed the food for the picnic πŸ™‚ so on we went looking for a Tesco…after walking here and there and asking we found one, got our food, and started eating…fine weather, good conversation, and a much-awaited rest…what more could you wish for?

Then at night MCA was online, having found wifi in a cafe, so we had some decent time to chat where no one was working, and of course to play a game of Carcassone which we hadn’t done in a while πŸ™‚
