Tilt – The Skewed Tale of the Tower of Pisa, by Nicholas Shrady is the last (but one…just finished another book, but won’t blog about that ;)) book that I’ve read. It tells the story of why and how the Tower of Pisa came to be, and how it developed throughout the years, from the numerous years in which it’s construction was halted, to what was going on in the political, economic and social spheres of life in Pisa and beyond to produce this Tower.
I found the book a very pleasant read, easily taking you through the story without making it very heavy. I felt that it gave me sufficient background to understand not just the Tower but also the environment it was built in. It also explains what has been done to try and ‘untilt’ the Tower, or campanile, as it is called in Italian.
But why did I chose this book? Well…you might get to know, and sooner rather than later, if you manage to put two and two togetehr tog et the right answer ;).
